Our next stop on this three-week road trip, let me repeat,
THREE-WEEK ROAD TRIP was Hearst Castle.
William Randolph Hearst, the publishing tycoon, built Hearst Castle on
more than 250,000 acres of land in 1947.
The castle has 165 rooms, two tennis courts that were lit by
movie set lights (he dabbled in Hollywood too), a billiards room, two guest
houses, and 127 acres of gardens. Oh, did I mention Hearst once had a zoo too.
My favorite part of the tour was seeing the two pools, one
indoor and one outdoor. Hearst named the
indoor pool the Roman Pool and the outdoor pool the Neptune Pool. The Roman Pool has statues of Roman gods and
goddess. The floor of the pool is tiled
with gold leaf.
The Neptune Pool took twelve years to construct because
Hearst wanted to expand it three times. The
pool holds 345,000 gallons of water and has an oil burning heating system.
Check back tomorrow for Part Six of The Road Trip.
