The Head Tilt

Ever since I was a little girl I have been tilting my head in pictures.  When I was a toddler it was to the left.

As I have grown up my head tilt has shifted to the right.

I didn’t really realize how much I tilted my head in pictures until my sister made my shot book.  If you don’t know what shot book is, it is a book that you take around with you on your 21st birthday and record what drinks or shots you took and who bought them for you.  Anyway my sister included two pages in my shot book titled “Homage to the Head Tilt”.  There are a total of twenty-one pictures of me tilting my head in pictures from when I was a toddler till when I was a freshman in college.

Now when pictures are taken I have to mentally think, “Am I tilting my head?”  Or the person taking the picture has to yell at me not to tilt my head.

Spring Break 2001

For spring break my junior year in high school my family went to Palm Coast, Florida to visit my Aunt Judy and Uncle Bill.  They had a house on the inter-coastal waterway at the time.  My mom, aunt and I went to Flagler Beach one of the days and I brought my camera along just in case.

When we got there, this guy was boogie boarding and wiping out on purpose so I started to take some pictures.  He noticed I was doing this and continued to do wipe out until I got the perfect shot.  I know the exposure isn’t the best but the action is amazing.  This is when I still had to run my camera on manual and had to adjust the shutter speed and f-stop with each frame and I got caught up in the moment.

I also took this picture of this palm tree while we were in Florida.  I love the angle and the texture of the bark that is falling off.

2008 Final Four and National Championship

First off, I know what you’re going to say, my new Royals t-shirt didn’t bring us any more good luck than my last one.  Oh well, it’s still cute.

There are two days in 2008 I’ll never forget.  On the morning of Saturday, April 5th I was lined up outside of the Granada in Downtown Lawrence to try and get the few seats that weren’t reserved but were still available.  I was the second person in line and when the doors opened I asked about re-entry once the game had started and I was told that they could not guarantee it.  The big hitch in my plan was that I had to go turn on the video boards at Allen Fieldhouse and once they were on and working my boss said I could leave because he would be there in case something went wrong.  I spent most of the day at the Granada with my sister and this couple playing poker until I called a taxi to take me to Allen Fieldhouse to turn on the video boards.  Turning them on went off without a hitch and now I had to wait for another taxi to pick me up at Allen Fieldhouse to take me back to the Granada.  The whole ride there I was worrying about what I was going to do if I couldn’t get back in because the Granada would be at capacity.  Luckily my worrying was all for naught because I got right back into the Granada and back into the seat my sister had been saving for me.

Then Cole Aldrich had the best game of his career up to that point and put Tyler Hansbrough in his place.  Once I knew we were going to win the game I was so excited I began jumping up and down and my elbow connected with my sister’s cheekbone.  Let me just say she wasn’t in much of a partying mood after that.  With about a minute left in the game we rushed into Massachusetts Street but didn’t stay long because I basically gave my sister a black eye.

My sister and I didn’t have big plans for Monday’s Championship game.  We just watched the game at her friend’s house near Allen Fieldhouse.  Again, I had to turn on the video boards at Allen Fieldhouse and make sure they were working before I could leave and watch the game.  During the whole second half I had a bad feeling in my stomach and I don’t even think I watched “Mario’s Miracle” live.  I thought the game was over and had walked into the other room to get something to eat.  When people started cheering from the TV room, I ran back in to watch the replays.  At the end of regulation, I just kept saying that one of Memphis’ players, Joey Dorsey, had fouled out.  In overtime, Kansas dominated Memphis, with Memphis only scoring five points.

After Kansas won we didn’t immediately rush down to Massachusetts Street because another guy and I wanted to see “One Shinning Moment”.  After that was over, we left for Downtown Lawrence.  I was surprised it wasn’t that hard to find a parking spot.  Since you couldn’t have glass outside on Mass. Street, one guy we were with had a box of sangria but took the sangria out of the box so it was just a bag of sangria.  A police officer commented that it was the most ingenious thing he had seen all night.

Rain, Rain Go Away & The Royals

I am so sick of this rain.  It just puts me in a sleepy, bad mood.  It could also do with being up at 3:35 am writing this blog, but whatever.

Tensions are going to be running high today in the Royals vs. White Sox games.  After all the suspensions, hopefully the Royals will start to calm down and start playing baseball.  I know you have to play with some amount of emotion but the players need to realize that this is their profession and not a hockey game.  Fights are expected in hockey but not baseball.

I can’t believe White Sox’s center fielder Adam Eaton didn’t receive any punishment after video shows that he was the one that mouthed off to Royal’s pitcher Yordano Ventura first.  Which then lead to the Thursday dugout-clearing brawl.  If you still have not seen the fight you can watch it at http://m.mlb.com/video/v86661883.  This video does not show an angle of Eaton mouthing off to Ventura and the announcers place all the blame on Ventura, which I don’t believe.

I even purchased another Royals t-shirt because I think the one I have is bad luck.  I understand that’s silly to think a t-shirt is bad luck but I swear it is.  I wore it on certain games during the World Series last year and those were the games the Royals lost; so I just wore my Royals shirt on travel days.  This year I wore it to the second game in the series against the Oakland Athletics, when the Royals lost 5 to nothing.  I finally told myself I needed to get a new shirt.  I haven’t tested it out yet but I plan on wearing it today.

My Vivofit and Billie's Last Day

My mom said to me yesterday, ”there is a Mother’s Day and a Father’s Day but no Daughter’s day, so happy Daughter’s day!”  In the bag was a Garmin Vivofit.  I promptly handed it back to her saying I don’t need a GPS and she said that this is not what this is.  She said it is a pedometer, calculates how many calories you have burned in a day, even how well you are sleeping.  She said the sleeping feature is the main reason she bought it for me because I have my days and nights mixed up.  Take right now for example, it’s 1:00 am and I’m sitting here writing my blog but I won’t post it until later this morning when I’ve had more sleep to proof read what I wrote.

Gosh my arm looks pale in that picture.  When is it going to be warm enough to lay outside and get some sun?

Olathe Medical Center’s Emergency’s Department lost a great member of their team yesterday.  Billie Lay is the best housekeeper in the department and she had to take an extended leave of absence.  Yesterday was her last day.  A retired nurse and even nurses that had the day off came into work to see her on her last day.  To me that shows how much Billie meant to everyone and how appreciative they were of her outstanding work.
